A female discovered by David Bilcock at 0750 hours, on his second check of the quarry this morning - only the second record for the county following one at Willen Lake on 13th April 1981. Dave phoned Steve Rodwell who was closeby birding at Wilstone, as well as Roy Hargreaves & Ian Williams, to come over and confirm that he wasn't seeing things!! He also contacted me as I was driving towards Milton Keynes for Rob's GWE and within minutes place it on his twitter feed and consequently RBA. An extremely successful twitch considering the privacy of the site and the very limited parking availability and by 10am, some 50 or so local birders had connected. The bird traversed both the Bucks and Herts side of the imaginary border and although distant, afforded views of all of the salient features (eg, all dark legs, pallid appearance, incomplete breast-band, pale-brown collar, large head & LRP size). On the numerous occasions it was chased by the LRP, a clear-cut wing-bar could be seen. Due to the distance and haze involved, I managed only modest record shots of the bird, but Ian Williams who remained after I departed at 1030 managed to get much closer views of it and did well with much better shots. About 70 birders had connected before it was finally chased away by an LRP and off over Aldbury Nowers at 1137.
