Approx: nesting and around rafts, would've been record number of nests/ young here by long way eventually but all eggs seen to be eaten by adult Herring Gull.
02/05/17Herring GullCalvert BBOWT Lake, Calvert1T Watts
Adult, think same one of pair that have been seen displaying and mating on Tern raft made a harrowing visit today. It systematically went through the many B.H.Gull nests and ate all the eggs, heavily mobbed but snapped back and wouldn't be driven off.I returned later and still there, some eggshells visible and nests scattered. We have been trying to find ways of deterring the B.H.Gulls from using rafts to let the Terns in but guess this would have been Terns fate eventually? Very sad to watch, amazed that later with Herring sat amongst B.H.Gulls , some were looking sadly at nests but most mating!!There were about 10 nests and increasing, started re-building nests instantly, they don't give up easily but fear that Gull will return. Regarding the Herring, it/ they have shown breeding behaviour and wonder if nesting not far away, maybe factory roof in Bicester/Aylesbury? and visiting rafts for easy food ? Either way, both gulls are newish trend on reserve and pretty sure the end for Common Terns, 4 are present displaying but chased off by gulls when go near rafts. Seen with Warren this afternoon, took photos. .
