Ferruginous Duck

This bird has a uniform ferruginous breast and flanks, whereas the "round-headed bird" of 2011/12 had duller, more olive flanks contrasting with the ferruginous breast; I wonder if the that is more characteristic of birds coming out of eclipse, younger males or just variation?
