male presumably. Singing bird reported for several days (weeks?). Went to check it out with Andrew Dickery this morning and found it singing strongly in the NE corner of the wood. Most passages of song were typical Iberian "chit chit chit chit tic cha-cha-cha-cha-cha" but occasionally it left off the last section. in addition it had other musical phrases that did not incorporate anything sounding like the rocking two tone "chiff - chaff." We both agreed that the voice quality was far more musical and tuneful than that we associate with Common Chiffchaff. I returned home to listen to recordings on Xeno -canto and found many of them to be musical and varied in their composition. I was surprised by this as I was expecting the species to be singing like a common chiffchaff with a few extra notes but that is clearly not the case. it was often high in the ash trees it was hard to see much of the upper side of the bird. The underside seemed very pale in the belly and there was a hint of yellow-green but not enough for me to say it looked like some of Iberians I have seen in Spain. As we wanted to try to hear it make the upward toned positive sounding contact call that might differentiate it from the sadder "hwee" of Common Chiffchaff I played a short burst of Iberian contact calls but elicited no reaction as the bird continued in full song. Structurally I thought the bird looked slimmer and longer than the more compact common chiffchaff and especially I noted this in the wings, the primary projection of these being significantly longer, tending towards that of willow warbler and the wing tips finished about 1/3 of the way down the tail length whereas Common chiffchaff tends to stop at or near the tail base. In my opinion this is a good shout for the bird to be Iberian so I will await the rarity committee's views with interest. SU459225.
