2024 | Pomarine Skua, Keyhaven Lagoon, 1st October, Picked up at ~1740 when scanning the Solent from the seawall alongside Keyhaven Lagoon. All moved together as a group, headed west and passed over Hurst Spit out of view within a couple of minutes. 2 pale morph adults with complete spoons were immediately apparent. All the other 4 birds were very similar in size/structure - getting on for Herring Gull size (plenty of BHG and HGs in same scope view for comparison) and moving with relaxed, steady flight, into a relatively light north westerly wind. 2 juveniles. 1 was relatively pale, the other a darker intermediate. The other two birds were perhaps immature birds - resembling pale phase adult, without spoons. Didn't get a good look at the underwing barring in the excitement.". * |
