ad. Six screaming Swifts in a group flying around Elliston House, Elliston Road. One adult flew out of a Swift nestbox at 21.35 and it or another flew into the same nestbox at 21.40. The nestbox being used has an access ramp and the entrance is on the underside of the box. House Sparrows nest in the two other Swift nestboxes, which have an entrance on the front and no access ramp. A youngster was seen looking out of the nestbox by the owner (Mrs McAndrew) in July. nests. One nest in gable on one property. Lady at No. 2 said she'd had three nests on the rear of her property but two fell off during bad weather. One nest currently has young as she saw two eggshells below the nest. SZ328879.

I watched the property for 20 minutes between 16.40 and 17.00 hrs and, after a couple of minutes, a Swift flew in under the soffit just beyond the far nestbox. It first flew up to the hole and back down before making a second attempt and going in. Five minutes later, a second Swift flew up to the hole of the furthest nestbox and back down again before making a second attempt and then going straight in. Five minutes after that, another bird flew up to the nearest nestbox and went straight in. Audible screams were heard. All three birds stayed in their respective nesting places and were still there when I left. The lady who lives in the property moved there in 2003 and has had Swifts nesting there all that time. About four years ago, she had the bargeboards repaired and redecorated and put up the two nestboxes then. I have added the info to the RSPB's Swift Mapper. SZ342860.

m. Male with yellow Darvic right leg FPU. Information from ringer: This swan was ringed at Abbotsbury on the 20th July 2019 during our biennial roundup of incoming moulting birds. It did not hatch at Abbotsbury. It's metal BTO is XY1714. It was sexed as a male and aged as a 'code 5' so it would have hatched in 2018. We also received a sighting from Bembridge Harbour (IoW) on the 10th August 2021. Best regards, Steve Groves (Swanherd).
